International Comparison of Europe’s Innovation Performance and the Turkish Paradox
Sirin Elci
Founder & Director, Technopolis Group, Turkey
Innovation is at the core of the Lisbon Strategy which aims to make the European Union the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world, capable of sustained economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion. The European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS), an instrument developed under the Lisbon Strategy, evaluates and compares the innovation performance of the European countries. The sixth edition of the EIS covering 2006 results includes, for the first time, a “Global Innovation Scoreboard” report (GIS). The GIS compares the innovation performance of the Europe to that of 16 countries in the World. These are the major R&D spenders and emerging economies: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russian Federation, Singapore, South Africa and the US. This presentation provides an overview of the GIS and focuses on the case of Turkey which presents a paradox in that although, unlike the other European countries, the innovation demand is the highest, the performance is low.

Innovation Diplomacy- how a new national strategy is changing cross border relations for Denmark.
Marianne Toftegaard Poulsen
Executive Director, Innovation Center Denmark
Denmark has a declared objective of becoming the foremost knowledge based society in the world by 2015. One of the strategies to support this objective is to establish a number of Innovation Centers around the world. These centers will act as bridgeheads to facilitate cross-boundary cooperation and innovation. A pilot Innovation Center was established in Silicon Valley in June 2006. Based on the pilot’s results, a decision was made to establish Innovation Centers in Shanghai and Munich. This presentation explores the business model, the overall ambitions and the results from this new approach to innovation. |

The practices of crowdcasting and crowdsourcing are two key developments to emerge from this trend. In this talk, we will discuss how organizations can tap into the expertise of outsiders by utilizing these techniques, and some of the considerations that characterize these exchanges. We will identify several malleable parameters that will help organizations structure their outreach efforts. |
